Mount Olive Pickle Company wanted to develop a prototype house for migrant workers that would elevate the current subpar standards that exist. The goal was to create a design that could easily be replicated by individual farmers. To that end, the design employs an eight-foot grid as the fundamental design unit to conform to most building material dimensions. A simple vernacular form native to North Carolina is also employed as a means of simplifying construction and harmonizing with the rural context. The 1st of these structures has been completed in Lenoir County, NC in a joint partnership between Harvey Farms, Duke University, the North Carolina conference of the United Methodist Church, and Mount Olive Pickle Company.
